DESCRIPTION:
Help us continue our annual tradition of opening and maintaining the trail to the historic St. Mary’s Peak Fire Lookout, located at 9,000 feet. As one of the busiest trails in the Bitterroot National Forest, early-season maintenance is essential. In 2024, the Sharrott Fire impacted the lower section of the trail. This project will focus on rehabilitating the burned areas, which includes clearing downed and charred trees, cleaning drainage areas, and redefining the trail tread. Snow levels permitting, we may also tackle brushing vegetation and removing loose rocks from the trail.
The hike to the lookout is challenging, gaining 2,500 feet of elevation over 3.5 miles. However, the reward at the summit is well worth the effort: breathtaking views of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness! For more information and reviews about the hike, check out AllTrails.
Camping accommodations will be available at a private residence, where our generous host will prepare a delicious dinner for the group on Saturday evening. We’ll dine in a beautiful yard surrounded by stunning views of the Bitterroot’s rugged mountains and agricultural valley. Join us for great company and lively conversation—just don’t forget your camp chair!
SBFC will provide breakfasts, lunches, and snacks.
